NEAPOLITAN RITUALS AND CUSTOMS

Naples is a perennial ritual. History, traditions, mysticism and beliefs, habits and histrionics make the Neapolitan city an intertwining of acts and thoughts consolidated over time, becoming rituals. Each culture has its own rituals. The Neapolitan one has more. Naples has an ever-present past and this generates a lived daily life with Fortune, Religion, Magic, Death, the food and the Dream.

THE CULT OF THE "CAPUZZELLE"

Every Monday, a day dedicated to the cult of the divinities of the subsoil, from one hundred and fifty years old, a group of pilgrims descends to the "Fontanelle cemetery", located in the bowels of the Rione Sanità, and which then branches off, with a series of tunnels, right under the Capodimonte hill. The fontanelle cemetery, like other places under the historic center of Naples, is a set of skulls and human remains; souls of the Purgatory in search of prayers to finally find eternal peace. Every Monday the Neapolitans pray for these souls. Each believer chooses the soul to which to give relief ("Arrifrescare") starting a real adoptive relationship with the skull to which the soul belongs; they pray, light candles and clean the "capuzzella" in exchange for the possibility of asking the "freshened" soul for a grace or a pleasure.
